A tile is free when no tile overlaps it from a higher layer and either its left or right edge is open on the same layer. A gap above or below a tile does not make it free.
Each starting deal on Mahjong.host is generated with a complete legal solution. Your choices can still lead to a blocked position. Use Undo to try another route, or Shuffle to make the remaining board solvable again.
Mahjong Solitaire is a solo matching puzzle. Traditional Mahjong is usually a four-player game involving drawing and discarding tiles to build a winning hand. This site offers the solitaire puzzle.
Shuffle keeps your remaining tile faces and match count, but clears Undo history. It creates a solvable arrangement; if necessary, it places the remaining tiles on an open board.
